SMOKE ALARMS AND CO DETECTORS
Protect Your Family with Quality CO & Smoke Detectors
Smoke alarms and CO detectors are essential for home safety (and required by law in most buildings). But they must be placed correctly, and in more than one room as well. Because, while having your smoke alarm located in the same room as the fireplace is a smart idea, by the time smoke from an upstairs room reaches the detector in the living room downstairs, the upstairs is already engulfed in flame.
As part of our safety and code inspection, Dynamic Electricians will inspect all of your existing smoke and CO detectors. It’s a simple part of our service and, while you should be testing your alarms every month, we’ll also check placement to make sure that an alarm is located everywhere one should be.
Smoke Alarm Placement
Obviously you want to place smoke alarms anywhere there’s an open flame. Fireplaces and kitchens are the most common areas, but they aren’t the only places where fires can start in the home. Damaged wires and other issues can cause a fire to start in any room. For safety reasons, you need at least one smoke alarm in every room with a flame or heat source, and one on every floor of your home.
Placing a smoke alarm in every central hallway (to cover smoke from rooms) is great, but it’s best to place a smoke alarm in every room. With a smoke alarm in each room, an alarm is more likely to trigger as soon as a fire starts.
Of course, the best way to stay safe is to use interconnected smoke alarms. These alarms work in cooperation with each other, as soon as one triggers, they all begin to sound off a warning. Fire safety is a matter of timely response. The sooner you know there’s a problem, the sooner you can react and get away safely. Having an interconnected smoke alarm in each room ensures rapid response to any uncontrolled open flame.
As an added bonus, Dynamic Electricians can help you out when it comes to installing smoke alarms. We can install combination alarms with the highest quality sensing equipment, and we can install main-line voltage alarms with rechargeable batteries. These alarms do not require battery replacements and are usually rated for 10 years before needing replacement. They’re powered by your home’s electrical grid, and include a backup battery for electrical emergencies.
